Across diverse geographies, mini-grids have been employed to provide energy access to off-grid and rural communities. A mini-grid is a group of interconnected distributed energy resources (DERs) plus load(s) or a single DER plus load(s) within clearly defined boundaries. Mini-grids can incorporate either a single generation source (e.g., a diesel generator) or multiple DERs (e.g., PV and battery storage) and supply electricity to more than one
building, Solar Home systems and energy generation plants installed at customer grid.
Most installed mini-grids in remote areas of emerging countries are isolated. Historically Mini Grids were used to be connected to a single DER but due to declines in cost of PV and battery energy storage as well as
advancements in control systems, modern isolated mini-grids usually include more than one DER, allowing mini-grid
owners to save on energy costs.
